August 20. 2009

Lesson Plan 3: Poetry in Paint

Whom: Lauren Henriksen

Location: Tuerk House

Materials Needed: Watercolors, brushes, towels, paper, poetry selections, etc.

Time Line:

11:00- Introduction of myself and review the idea of the mural project for new students

11:10- Discuss the lesson planned and how it relates to the students and the mural

11:20- Begin the Poetry in Paint project.

11:40: Anyone who is finished and wants to touch up their coats of arms piece from last week may do so.

11:50- Wrap up the project and lay all the paintings, then critique the designs based on which are most successful at relating an idea or a message, and which might be good to put in a Tuerk House mural.

11:58- Hand out homework assignment

12:00- Clean and dismiss

Project Outline: The adults and I will be thinking about the process of narrating poetry visually today. At the beginning of class, I will present the option of either writing 4-8 lines of poetry that they create, or choose from a selection of poetry pieces I have printed and brought with me. They will then analyze the writings and create and image that represents the written words with watercolor. I’m choosing to supply watercolor because it seems to be the material that they have been most attracted to in the previous classes, and the color palette is rich and playful. In the end, the adult’s work will be discussed if they feel confident, and then hung in the Turk House for others to see. A homework assignment will be handed out requesting the adults think about the power of the written word, and that they write a little poem or piece about the Tuerk House that will be considered in the ideas behind the mural.
