11:20- Start the Visualizing Words project.

11:50- Lay all the paintings, then critique the designs based on which are most successful at relating the poem.

11:58- Announce homework assignment

12:00- Clean and dismiss

Project Outline: The last project was extremely successful. The adults loved reading the poetry pieces I had collected, and created very beautiful, vivid, and imaginative illustrations based on them. This week, I really wanted to keep with the poetry and art connection since it has been so intriguing to them. Today I have selected three poems, the first being “Study of Two Pears” by Wallace Stevens. It is a very vivid and lightly abstracted description of two pears sitting on a table. I will ask the adults to create the image written as accurately as they can based on the poems visual descriptions of shape and color, etc. This lesson will focus on more on a fine tuning of the process of turning beautiful words into beautiful imagery, and it will provide an opportunity for some formal training –something they are interested in learning. Then I will hand them another short, descriptive poem that is a little more advanced in creating an image from. We will dissect each word and line piece by piece and discuss the image that may be embedded in them.

Conclusion: The project was very successful, but we only had barely enough time to draw and paint the pears. They loved the opportunity for formal training though.

Lesson Plan 6: Visualizing Words (cntd.)

Whom: Lauren Henriksen

Location: Tuerk House

Materials Needed: Watercolors, brushes, towels, paper, poetry selections, etc.

Time Line:

11:00- Introduction of myself and review the idea of the mural project for new students. Start serious discussion about what they would like to see on the murals about to be proposed.

11:15- Finish discussion and hand out the Visualizing Words assignment.

11:30- Finish the Visualizing Words project.

11:40: Wrap up the project

11:50- Lay all the paintings, then critique the designs based on which are most successful at relating the poem.

11:58- Announce homework assignment

12:00- Clean and dismiss

Project Outline: First thing today we will be having and brainstorming of ideas about the mural to be created. We will debate and talk about the symbols and images that are most important on the walls of the Tuerk House. Then we will start the art lesson. -Last week’s lesson plan was successful in that they were engaged in learning and reading throughout the class. However, it was cut a little short, so the adults didn’t have enough time to finish their pieces. Today, I will finish with the second half of last week’s project. This lesson will focus on more on a fine tuning of the process of turning beautiful words into beautiful imagery, and it will provide an opportunity for some formal training –something they are interested in learning. They will be handed a short, descriptive poem that is a little more advanced in creating an image from. We will dissect each word and line piece by piece and discuss the image that may be embedded in them.
